I’ve always liked dark future, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic and dystopian stories.

This idea came about because a good friend and DP, Terrel J. Melton, had just purchased a Brevis (a 35mm lens adapter for his Panasonic HVX200) and wanted to enter the 2009 48-hour film competition here in Austin.

I had heard a little about the 2012 end of the world scare, and figured “what would happen if the meteor killed life on the surface but people underground survived?”

Well, on a plane ride for business, I sat down and started the idea. A week later, after coming home, I gave it to my beautiful wife and editor, Rita Quinn, for her comments and edits.

We shot this, around August 2009, in Bull Creek Park (in Austin, Texas) in horrendous heat and chiggers! Ouch. Hadn’t heard of them before, but became well acquainted after that.

There was no real rehearsal, and we did it all on the spot, including choreographing a quick fight scene – courtesy of Blake Laster (Kemp) and my good friends, Sal and Bobby Cabral (professional stuntmen and actors).

I did a first cut myself and put it on youtube, then, another friend Patrick Thomas (aka Patatoa) helped me create the special effects for the end of the fight scene.

That second cut is here:
